Although 2016 has been one of the hottest years on record, that summer heat wave isn’t stopping fall trends from making their first appearances on campus. Here’s some insight on taking that summer wardrobe into fall:

Colors: pumpkin spice, tan, yellow and pink

Pumpkin spice lovers rejoice. Not only can you drink fall’s most popular beverage, but  you can wear it as well. The cozy color is now being incorporated into knits, blouses and dresses, easily flattering several skin tones. In addition, shades of tan are breaking out of the outer-wear only stereotype, making their fall debut in skirts, pants and tops.

The real eyebrow-raisers this season are the dusty shades of yellow and pink. Those who believe these more reserved hues are strictly spring colors might be scratching their heads at the moment, but for students who aren’t scared to go against the norm, this trend might be just the color element to experiment with for fall.

Outerwear: Bomber Jackets

When it comes to staying warm while looking fly, bomber jackets are a key outerwear staple as the leaves change. This Air Force uniform turned fashion statement can be found in nearly every store, and for good reason.

With various colors and styles available, bomber jackets have quickly become a wardrobe must-have for this chilly season. The jackets complement the essentials of any wardrobe, including leggings, jeans t-shirts and sun dresses.

Shoes: Booties and Loafers

To all the boot lovers that had to put away their favorite pair of shoes this summer, the wait to break out the boots is finally over.

The shoe front-runner this year are booties, an ankle-length version of the traditional knee-high boot. Booties come in all styles, and are made in several materials such as suede, leather and velvet. These shoes are perfect for keeping your toes toasty, while giving a chic edge to your outfit.

If you’re into the formal/comfortable look, loafers are the way to go. These shoes that were once a men’s smoking jacket staple, have now turned into street shoes. They can be found in an array of colors and designs ideal for transitioning from summer to fall.

Accessories: Chokers

Is there an easier way to add an edgy vibe to your look? Probably not. This ‘90s throwback lends that final touch of playful toughness to any outfit.

Although the classic black-strip choker is still a favorite, metallic, velvet, lace and bow styles have made their way into this simple yet outfit-changing staple.

Statement Piece: Sleeveless sweater dress

Thanks to this year’s high temperatures, a sleeveless sweater dress is the perfect combination of cozy and lightweight. Not only does the dress combine popular turtleneck and side slit trends, but it also provides the ideal balance between hot and cold as we move into fall.

For casual-wear lovers, pair this dress with leggings and athleisure shoes, stylish running shoes worn for events that don’t necessarily involve working out. If it begins to get too cold for comfort outside, bring the outfit together with an oversized denim jacket.

For a more formal look, pair the sweater dress with skinny dress-pants and loafers, choosing a solid-colored blazer for outerwear.
