Swamp Daddy’s introduces Cajun soul food to Sioux Falls
At the end of Phillips Avenue, tucked into a cement oasis housing popular eateries such as The Source Coffee Roastery + Taproom and Bokie Gelato, a somewhat hidden treasure lies.
Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen offers customers a taste of classic Louisiana dishes such as the catfish po’boy, cajun chicken pasta and spicy jambalaya with delicious sides such as bread pudding, hush puppies and pork skins. The menu also features kids options and revolving specials like gumbo or chicken tacos.
Not only are customers given a taste of Louisiana, but a feel for it too. The walls, decorated with lanterns, string lights and masks, are reminiscent of New Orleans’ famous Mardi Gras celebration. The restaurant contains an open counter with the full kitchen in view, allowing for onlookers to watch the chefs cook and serve the food right in front of you.
While there are only three tables inside the restaurant, it connects to an open seating area shared with The Source Coffee Roastery + Taproom and Game Chest. Outside, the coffee drinkers, gamers and lovers of Cajun food mingle together, creating a lively scene.
Receiving a 4.5 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor.com, several customers claim that Swamp Daddy’s serves the best Cajun food in Sioux Falls, and also the most authentic.
Although I can’t say I am an expert on the authenticity of Cajun food or Louisiana cuisine in general, I was thoroughly delighted by my experience (although the jambalaya did prove a bit spicy for my taste), and I would certainly return for more.
The workers were especially friendly (and patient with my photographing, even sneaking into some shots for a photobomb), and with prices in the $10-$13 range, eating here will not break the bank. The only critique I have is their odd business hours. Just make sure to double check that they’re open.
The casual atmosphere, delicious food and fun of trying something new makes Swamp Daddy’s a perfect choice for anything from a mid-afternoon quick dine-in to a Friday date night. Bring your appetite and indulge in some hush-puppies.
