Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse delivers new take on old formula

The superhero genre has grown and been burned into our culture over the last 11 years with both The Avengers and The Dark Knight trilogy.

One of the more well-known characters is Spider-Man, whose story has been told countless times over six different films and three different timelines.

Recently, the story has been told again, but in a way that feels fresh and breathes life into not only the superhero genre but animated works as a whole.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is a new take on the Spider-Man formula. It introduces new characters and delves into the expanded universe of other “Spider-People.”

The film’s main character Miles Morales, a teenager living in Brooklyn, is brought into the life of being a spider-man. He must help other spider-people travel back to their universe. Other main characters include Spider-Man, Peter Parker and Spider-Woman.

There are also side characters who, though they have no bearing on the story itself, are there for comedic relief. They are hilarious, given the writing and voice acting in this movie is pure gold.  And even though certain characters have only a few lines, you want to see them succeed, which is hard to accomplish with so many characters in a movie. But somehow, they managed to do it.

The biggest plus of this movie? Its animation style. The animation is gorgeous. It blends the graphic, comic-style with tons of color, and this is something that has never been done to this extent before.

Each frame is a treat to look at, and the action scenes are easy to follow, meaning they aren’t jam packed with explosions, which a lot of superhero movies tend to do to slim out production costs in the final products.

In addition, the score of the film is very fitting and so great to listen to. The most notable is Swae Lee and Post Malone’s “Sunflower,” which fits the scenes it’s played in perfectly.

Even if you are not a fan of superhero movies, this film is a great work of art that almost anyone, especially fans of animation, can enjoy.
