Review: Nothing Bundt Cakes offers affordable and Instagram-worthy dessert splurge

If you have ever wondered what it would look like if Martha Stewart and Pinterest teamed up to create a picture-perfect pastry shop, then you are in luck.

Nothing Bundt Cakes, nestled between The Man Salon and AR Workshop near the Western Mall, is a cute, clean shop that features plenty of bright colors. The store also offers plenty of cookware that would delight your “punny” mom, including a spatula that says “You Had Me At Cake” and a spoon with “doughlicious” engraved into the handle.

However, this little bakery in central Sioux Falls isn’t unique. Nothing Bundt Cakes is part of a larger franchise with over 300 stores nationwide, including locations in Omaha and Minneapolis. To ease that just-another-chain feeling, let it be known that each location is independently owned and operated. The Sioux Falls joint, which opened on Dec. 14, 2018, is run by Bryon and Diane Meyer who can be regularly seen working the register and helping customers.

But I wasn’t visiting Nothing Bundt Cakes to buy some cute (but expensive) spoon. When I walked into the store Saturday evening, my mission was to determine whether these famous bundt cakes passed the sweet tooth connoisseur test.

There are plenty of options to choose from, both in sizes and flavors. I opted for the bundtlet, which is supposed to be a single serve cake. Though, depending on how greedy you get when sugar is at stake, could be split with another person. Having nothing to do with the fact that

I love sweets and only because I take my job as a food critic seriously, I got three different flavors: chocolate chocolate chip, white chocolate raspberry and the limited-time, featured flavor peanut butter chocolate swirl.

I went for the peanut butter chocolate swirl first. The cake was noticeably moist and fluffy. As it is on all of the cakes, it featured a cream cheese based, vanilla frosting on top. There were also some crushed-up Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in the little cake as well. While it was very tasty, you definitely need some water or milk to go with this one. The bundtlet is a mush of flavors and the peanut butter leaves your mouth feeling a little sticky.

To give my mouth a break, I tried the white chocolate raspberry next. Let me tell you, this was the right decision. Again, the cake was super moist and the icing wasn’t overpowering (which is a huge compliment from me because I hate icing and usually scrap it off any cake or cupcake I eat—I’m weird, I know). The white chocolate is more of a hint than its own flavor but it balances the sweet and semi-tart raspberry so well. If you are aren’t a big sweets/chocolate person, this would be a good choice for you. I almost felt healthy while eating it.

To finish my well-balanced and nutritional meal, I ended with the chocolate chocolate chip. From the first bite, you can easily understand why this is one of their most popular flavors. It is simple yet delicious. The soft texture combined with the rich, chocolate flavors will leave any chocolate lover satisfied. A scoop of vanilla or chocolate chip ice cream on the side and you’ve got yourself a gourmet dessert. The only criticism I have for this flavor is the icing (again, I’m weird) detracts from the rich, chocolatey taste.

For us broke college students, price is probably the next most important thing to test. A single bundtlet costs $4.19 and you can order in store, online or over the phone. If you want more flavors, you can choose an order of bundtinis—bit size, cupcake-type deserts sold by the dozen. It costs $19.99 and comes with a pre-assortment of their most popular flavors—lemon, chocolate-chocolate chip, white chocolate raspberry and red velvet. If you want to choose your flavors you can call ahead or request a custom order at the store, as long as you are willing to wait 20 minutes for them to put it together.

If for some reason you want to feed a crowd, Nothing Bundt Cakes also does 8-inch, 10-inch and tiered cakes that can serve eight to 10 people for the smallest size and about 26 people for the largest. If you’re getting married, having a huge birthday bash or want to try a new Easter dessert, Nothing Bundt Cakes says it will create a custom cake for any occasion. You can also get these at a semi-reasonable price: $40 for a decorated 10-inch cake.

All in all, Nothing Bundt Cakes is the place to go if you want a sweet splurge without breaking the bank at CH Patisserie. They also have a gluten-free option for my glucose-sensitive friends. If you like cake, or just like a dessert that offers Instagram-worthy pictures, then Nothing Bundt Cakes is worth a try.
