Gas leak temporarily halts track construction

A gas line was punctured during construction on the Larson Track and Field complex, causing a gas leak on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Construction workers were staking the sidewalk to pour concrete when a spike punctured the line, according to Rick Tupper,  Director of Campus Safety. A Viking Alert text message was sent to students and faculty at 4:01 p.m., in the minutes following the leak.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue have closed the block on Grange between 33rd St. and 37th St. while repairs are being made by the MidAmerican Energy Company.

At 6:06 p.m. gas was shut off, according to a Viking Alert.

The repairs will most likely take several hours, but because of strong wind, no other precautions are needed for the campus or neighborhood, Tupper said.
