Cause of shattered door in Bergsaker remains unknown

During the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 28, one of Bergsaker Hall’s glass doors was shattered.

A group of Bergsaker residents, including freshmen Courtney Chrystal and Camryn Simmons, discovered the shattered door when entering the north side of the building.

“We were scared to open the door, so we went all the way around the building because we didn’t know what would happen if we opened the other one,” said Chrystal.

The group immediately called the Viking Advisor (VA) on call at 2:46 a.m., according to Simmons. Campus Safety was also notified, and responded to the incident within five minutes, Chrystal said.

“Campus Safety told us who to look for,” Chrystal said. “At first they thought someone had used their head because of the dome shape, so if [we saw] someone with abrasions, we should note that.”

Both Chrystal and Simmons said they did not see nor hear the door shatter.

“There was no one in the building at the time, but there were groups [of students] that had left Berg pretty recently,” Chrystal said.

Despite speculation by many freshmen residents, the cause of the shatter and those associated with the incident are still unknown, according to Corey Kopp, director of Campus Life. Video footage from security cameras positioned in the Bergsaker lobby has not been reviewed as of Oct. 3.

However, Kopp believes the incident happened without malicious intent.

“Right now, we don’t have any reason to believe it was anything other than an accident or fooling around,” Kopp said. “I’m not saying it wasn’t intentional, but there’s nothing that says it was malicious in nature.”

As of now, Campus Life is not treating it as anything more than damage, Kopp said.

“We would ask the student to pay for the repair or replacement. We would bill back the cost of whatever it is to replace the window to that particular person or group of people,” Kopp said.
