Men’s and Women’s golf teams earn second at Augustana Invite

On Aug. 28 and 29, the Augustana men’s and women’s golf stayed at home for the Augustana Invite at the Elmwood golf course. After some bad weather, the women’s golf team earned second place with a total two-round score of 626.

“We struggled a little bit this weekend,” head coach Peggy Kirby said. “The wind created a little indecision. It’s hard coming off of three wins; we were hopefully prepared, but injuries hampered us, and we weren’t able to play as sharp as usual.”

In total, five Vikings finished in the top 15 with senior Hannah Hankinson earning second place with a total score of 152. Senior McKayla Poppens also placed in the top 15 with a score of 156 to tie for fourth place.

Three Vikings tied for 11th place with seniors Annemarie Fisher, Sydney Weber and junior Alex Stone scoring 160. Natalie Young also participated in the tournament, tying for 16th place with a score of 161. The rest of the team included sophomore Kait Asklund who shot 167, freshman Molly Stevens, who shot a score of 169 and sophomore Hanna Morin with a score of 174.

“We all had a good mindset despite not playing our best.” McKayla Poppens said. “We learned areas in our games that we need to improve for next time.”

The women’s team followed the Augustana Invitational with a 9th place win at the Midwest Classic Tourney on October 7 and 8 at the Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg, Missouri.

The men’s golf team struggled on the first day of the Augustana Invite, but they were able to secure a second place finish.

“The first day was a struggle, but on the second day we came out and played some of the best golf I’ve seen in the last five years,” head coach Danny Sinksen said.

Jacob Zosel, from the University of Sioux Falls, came in first place for individuals after he shot a score of 146. Just under Zosel, Augustana sophomore Jacob Lee, senior Cole Crawford and freshman Spencer Ehlers tied for third place with a score of 148. Finally, in a tie for 13th place sophomore Alex Stanz was able to sink a hole-in-one on hole four to earn a score of 151.

After the Augustana invite, the men’s team traveled to the St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Oct. 7 and 8, where they placed 18th.
