Men’s swim and dive recruiting

On Feb. 25, swimming and diving head coach Lindsie Micko announced the first signings for the men’s team. The list included nine men who already have their events determined.

“We have had a ton of interest from across the country in our new program, and we will bring in a talented group from all over the country and world to experience what Augustana has to offer,” Micko said. “I’m excited about the future of both our men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.”

In November 2020, Augustana athletics announced the school would be adding a men’s swimming and diving team to its NSIC list. Since then, Micko has worked to build the program in time for the fall.

“The moment I spoke with the coach, she gave me the confidence to be a Viking,” recruit Luis Aguilar Delgado said.

Most of the recruits had no concerns joining a new team.

“We’re just doing an outstanding job with men’s swimming and diving because coach Lindsie Micko, who coaches the women’s team, has already recruited,” President Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin said during the Vision 2030 update.

Many of these recruits coming into the program will be first year students this fall.

“Coach Lindsie reached out to me and also took the time to give me a tour of the facility, which I very much appreciated,” recruit Steven Asmus said. “Her coaching philosophy is also something that I respect.”

The nine signees include Aeson Akins, Steven Asmus, Luis Aguilar Delgado, Pedro Borin, Jack Johnson, Mason Kauffeld, Kacper Mayerberg, Brady Monson and Juan Salas.

“I chose the program because of the coach and the enthusiasm they had to start a men’s team along with the fact that everyone is so supportive,” recruit Jack Johnson said.

The men’s swim team marks the 10th varsity sport for men at Augustana, and will be the only DII men’s swim program in South Dakota.

“In a day where the norm has been to cut athletic programs, it is very exciting to be a part of a university that wants to add opportunities for young people,” Micko said. “Augustana is an amazing school, and I’m excited we can provide the opportunity to compete for swimmers and divers.”
