New ASA senators share goals for school year

Students elected eight new senators to the Augustana Student Association (ASA) last month, completing the senate for this school year. Four of those senate spots are for freshmen, with Annaliese Wagers, Annie Johnston, Traniya Jordan and Laura Garcia Lopez chosen to represent the grade. They shared their goals and expectations for this year with the Mirror. Get to know them below:

Annaliese Wagers

Major: Government/International Affairs and Modern Foreign Languages

Hometown: Wausau, Wisconsin

Why did you decide to run for ASA?

I decided to run for ASA because I thought that it would be a good way to make a positive impact on campus.

What goals do you have for ASA this coming year?

My goals for ASA this year are to advocate for the improvements that students would like to see on campus.

What’s one thing you want people on campus to know about you?

A fun fact about me is that my favorite thing to do during fall is to go hiking to enjoy the fall colors.

Annie Johnston

Major: History (Pre-Law)

Hometown: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Why did you decide to run for ASA?

I ran for ASA as I love to engage with fellow students on campus, and I am always seeking to learn more about myself and others through this leadership role.

What goals do you have for ASA this coming year?

I plan to create a more equitable and informed campus where great opportunities are offered for every student on campus. My ultimate goal for ASA is to leave an impression on Augustana students and faculty that both satisfies and exceeds expectations in providing an inclusive and welcoming campus environment! Being on the curriculum committee, I am passionate about making sure the academic resources offered to students on campus are more than sufficient in helping everyone succeed!

What’s one thing you want people on campus to know about you?

I am a very competitive person. For example, I broke my foot the first week of college at the Elmen Center playing basketball.

Traniya Jordan

Major: Economics, Finance (Pre-Law)

Hometown: Kansas City, Kansas

Why did you decide to run for ASA?

I ran for ASA because I care about the well-being of students both on and off-campus. I wanted to contribute directly to the experience and diversity of Augie.

What goals do you have for ASA this coming year?

Goals I have for ASA include prioritizing the safety of our students by implementing safer systems across campus.

What’s one thing you want people on campus to know about you?

Football season is my favorite season. I’m a die-hard Chiefs fan!

Laura Garcia Lopez

Major: Biology and Engineering Physics

Hometown: Burgos, Spain

Why did you decide to run for ASA?

I thought it was a good opportunity to get involved with the Augustana community. I have held leadership positions in the past, and I enjoy helping others feel represented.

What goals do you have for ASA this coming year?

I want to make people feel supported and create a safe and healthy community on campus.

What’s one thing you want people on campus to know about you?

I love meeting new people so if you see me around campus, just say, “hi!”
