Freshman swimmer earns All-American honors at NCAA championships
An Augustana swimming and diving competitor took home four All-American honors at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which took place from March 8-11.
Bryn Greenwaldt, a freshman from Foley, Minnesota, competed in three individual events, including the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She also competed in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.
Greenwaldt, who was named NSIC Swimmer of the Year, went into the 50 freestyle championships with the nation’s second-fastest time at 22.50 seconds.
“The 50 is a super amazing race because if you mess up one thing, you’re done,” Greenwaldt said. “Your start has to be perfect, your break has to be perfect, your turn has to be perfect, and your finish has to be perfect.”
After swimming a preliminary time of 22.82 seconds, Greenwaldt qualified for the finals, where she finished with a time of 22.56 seconds and earned both second place and First Team All-American honors.
“I knew that if everything went really well that [second] is where I could end up,” Greenwaldt said.
Greenwaldt’s second All-American honors came on the same day as the 200 medley Relay. Greenwaldt, sophomores Nesrine Jelliti and Angelina Chan, and senior Kamryn Robarge collected Second Team All-American honors with a time of 1:43.30. The team placed 15th.
Just two days later, Greenwaldt led the 200 freestyle relay and earned an 11th place finish with a time of 1:33.27. The relay team, consisting of Greenwaldt, Robarge and sophomores Meesha Montgomery and Makoa Montgomery, took home Second Team All-American honors as well.
On the final day of competition, Greenwaldt took home her second First Team All-American honor with a seventh place finish in the 100 freestyle. Her time of 50.21 broke her own school record.
At the end of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Greenwaldt took home four All-America honors, two First Team honors in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and two Second Team honors in the 200 medley Relay and 200 freestyle Relay.
